I. Gold and Silver
SATB
Text: Tatar Folk Poetry, tr. Galeev
For his unaccompanied choral cycle Love Letters, Bern Herbolsheimer has chosen four traditional Tatar love-songs in the four-line poetic form of a ruba’i (the plural is “rubaiyat”). The poems are united by the mention of colors and reflect rapture and loneliness alike. Love Letters is a perfect example of Herbolsheimer’s luscious lyricism and consummate craftsmanship.

Once I had a gold and silver thimble,
But I can’t set it on the table now.
I would go to you within this note I write,
But I can’t fit inside of it.
